The area came under British control soon after, becoming part of the large estate belonging to the great sugar magnate, Sir Marshall Campbell, who sailed to South Africa from Glasgow in 1850. Indian indentured labourers were brought in to work on the sugar estates in 1860, bringing with them a vibrant and colourful culture, which gives the area its unique multi-cultural flavour.
Holiday-makers can enjoy lazing on the beautiful wide beaches, building sand castles, walking over the rocks at low tide examining the marine life or with a little more effort walk the promenade which stretches from Durban View Park in the south to Breakers Resort in the north – a favourite for all.
For the young at heart, the surfing is excellent. The locals all body surf, knee board, body board, and of course surf. For the holiday maker there is expert tuition and equipment to hire. One can also buy the equipment from the surf shops in the village.
Wind surfing has become popular on our beaches and there is good fishing, both from the shore or from a ski boat. Ski boats are able to launch from the beach through Granny's Pool and snorkeling in this area and the surrounding rock pools at low tide is very good.
The Sharks Board headquarters are situated on the ridge overlooking Umhlanga. It is one of the foremost facilities world-wide for research into the habits of this magnificent, misunderstood, marine creature. Tours of this facility aim to educate the public about sharks and their conservation.
In 1869, Umhlangas first beach cottage, the Oyster Lodge was built on a rocky site overlooking the sea and in the true spirit of Umhlanga hospitality, tea and scones were served to passers-by. The reflective roof of the cottage was also used as a beacon by passing ships captains to navigate safely around Umhlangas rocky headland. However in 1954 Umhlanga's distinctive red and white lighthouse was built to warn mariners away from the dangers of the rocks. The first hotel The Umhlanga Rocks Hotel was built in the 1920's and The Oysterbox Hotel was built on the site adjacent to the lighthouse in 1947. Other hotels soon followed and the village of Umhlanga Rocks soon became the most sought after area for local's to go on holiday. The rest as they say is history.
